Zulu bridal hat 'Isicholo'

Zulu bridal hat, made of natural hair and red pigments. The young girls were called ‘Itshishi’. They let their hair grow, cut it of, conserved it and worked the strings of hair around a concave frame of braided twines. Just before the wedding ceremony the completed hat was greased with fat and red ochre by the leder women of the community and was handed by them to the groom. During the festivity he handed over to his new bride the hat, made of her own hair. Early 20th century.

Sukuma shield, early 20th century, Tanzania. These shields are made of thick buffalo hide with side indentations, a raised boss in the center with wood handle and leather bindings. The shields were carried by Niatura warriors used for defense.and also as a symbolic ritual object. Provenance: collection of Ann De Pauw and Luc Huysveld.

Panya ngombe, the anthropo-zoomorphic face with elongated slit eyes, short overhanging forehead, slender nose, and carved, rectangular mouth. Triangular designs around periphery. Wooden sacrificial pole figure Fon

Wooden pole figure, dark sacrificial patina of mainly oil. Kudio type of Bochio, also called “guardians” are thin pole-like figures. They function as a sort of “lightning conductor” , as the figure is meant to be a substitute for the living person. The figure must attract evil forces and so spare its owner(s). The patina of oil and blood refers to the fact that this bochio protected a shrine as only Vodun priests may use that kind of offerings. Large abstract modernist sculpture in chestnut wood. Height 212cm. Provenance fond d'atelier of Roland LAVIANNE (1948-2022). This collection was acquired in collaboration with @igmarstuer (Aalst - Belgium) and @pschantiques (marché Paul Bert , Paris Saint-Ouen) We present here one of the two largest sculptures from his workshop. Simplifying forms to the extreme, Roland LAVIANNE develops a powerful play of volumes, shapes and lines, using light as a building material. Roland LAVIANNE translates a real mastery of the balance of volumes and lines of force, the characters, motionless and dynamic, seem to weave a theatrical conversation forever suspended.
